  • 7. Knighting Ceremony and Decision Night

In a castle of stone and timber, standing watch over 8,900 acres of enchanted wilderness, the young adventurers of Summerland gather for the most hallowed of ceremonies: Decision Night. Under the watchful eyes of their mentors, each brave soul steps forward to choose a sacred quest, each camper steps forth to pledge themselves to a noble quest, a vow that shall guide their journey beyond these enchanted walls.

With a sword made of hand-forged steel, they are knighted into the sacred Order of the Summerland Knights. As a token of their courage and commitment, each receives a scroll: a certificate of completion, sealed with the mark of Summerland Camps, and a promise of the adventures yet to come.

Past Decision Night oaths have included:

    • To keep the Behavior Planning Journal (BPJ) from this point forward.
    • To self-monitor and control screen time.
    • To keep a consistent gym schedule, using a SMART goal format.
    • To commit to 2 hours per day studying, no matter if I have homework or not.

Effective Summer Camp to “Reset” Family Relationships

Summerland is the oldest and ONLY summer camp, adventure trip, and wraparound services provider for video game addiction, social media overuse, and related problematic screen overuse issues.

Let’s face it- the world has changed dramatically in the last 15 years.  There are distractions everywhere, and it’s easy for young people to get off track.  Summerland Camp’s mission is to help young people learn to balance screen time activities with school, work, and home.  We see technology as a useful tool and a necessary component of modern life, but we also know that its overuse can bring young people unforeseen consequences.

SELF-REGULATION: THE ULTIMATE LIFE HACK!

Founded on motivational and sports psychology techniques, the Summerland Program for Technology Habit Change is an effective, time-tested curriculum that focuses on developing self-regulation skills. Specifically, campers learn how to manage their behaviors, emotions, and thoughts and align each with their targeted goals.

Campers learn that a secret to being successful in life is learning how to forgo immediate gratification (such as with video games or social media) in order to work on more important pursuits (such as focusing on school, work, or life enrichment). Campers learn practical strategies to ensure align their daily efforts with more important life goals.

Every camper participates in Behavior Change Groups– where a specially trained counselor leads the group through a set curriculum on behavioral change.  Campers are led through insight-oriented activities where they count the costs of endless hours of screen time activities and imagine the benefits of investing their time in more productive pursuits.  Educational, occupational, and social effects are all considered in our insight groups.

The capstone experience is to develop the intrinsic motivation to return home, armed with expertise in cognitive behavioral psychology- campers employ the same techniques utilized by Olympic athletes to achieve their goals and redefine their lives.

No more are the weekends of endless game playing or screen time activity.  Campers learn how to live within a predefined schedule and then transfer this skill back home.
