Screen Time Overuse and Holiday Stress

Screen Time Overuse and Holiday Stress

Holidays can be especially stressful, and it’s often when parents first notice their child overusing screens including iPhones, tablets, or laptops.  As we approach the holiday season, parents need to remember the effect media can have on developing minds and set appropriate limits.

Holiday Stress? Don’t forget about the kids…

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday’s parents often leave it to the kids to entertain themselves.  Many kids will spend extra time this holiday season in front of a screen and that means less socialization and inactivity. Extra hours playing video games, engaging in social media and watching TV may have kids feeling left out and isolated.

As parents are preparing meals, wrapping gifts or even working extra hours it is important to remember that children need daily physical activity and balanced nutrition.

Here are 3 tips for busy parents this holiday season.

1.  Daily Physical Activity:

Plan a time either in the morning or evening to take a walk with the kids or plan a fun activity outdoors.

2.  Meal Planning:

Meal preparation is a great way to assure a healthy meal is available for the family when the time is limited.

3.  Family involvement:

Why should Mom and Dad take on all the holiday duties?  Kids can help too. Spend quality time cooking, wrapping gifts, putting up lights and sending holiday cards.

Enjoy the holidays, take a deep breath and help kids cut down on their screen time.  Don’t forget to complete our contact form here if you have any additional questions.
