Learn New Skills While Having a Blast!

Summerland behavior coaches and licensed therapy staff accompany the adventure trip and are present 24/7. Groups are conducted up to twice per day, meaning your camper will receive 12 sessions during a typical 6-night, 7-day adventure course.

  • Who are Summerland Adventure Trips for?

    Summerland Adventure Trips are for boys and girls ages 12-17, and young adults ages 18-21 who need to detox from screens while learning self-regulation skills to better manage their screen habits. We also work on developing goals, healthy routines, and positive self-esteem.
  • Is a one-week trip going to be enough for my child?

    Even a one-week detox, while developing regulation skills, health interests, and participating in insight-oriented groups can be life-changing. Obviously, more time in the program creates more opportunities for personal growth. Most participants benefit from multiple Summerland experiences over the course of the year, and treatment does not have to be continuous.  For most Summerland participants, we recommend Online Behavior Coaching as a step-down from our in-person services.   • What if I need something ASAP and your next trip isn’t for another month?

    Please contact us right away to discuss your child’s needs. If we get enough interest, we will form a special trip outside of the times listed on the website. New groups are always forming.
  • How do I know this will work?

    Each year, Summerland helps over 100+ families get their children back on track socially and helps young people find their inner spark through our goal-setting methodology. While no treatment is effective 100% of the time, 93.55% of Summerland Families surveyed would recommend us to a friend. Families that are willing to participate in the online family workshop, set up a behavior contract with their child, and keep a Behavior Planning Journal (BPJ) along with their child report even higher levels of satisfaction.
  • Do you have any scholarships or discounts?

    We provide a 10% discount for registering your child for multiple weeks for any combination of Summerland Adventure Trips. For example, you can register for the Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, and any of the Spring Break trips and receive 10% off the entire cost. Military families receive a 15% discount. Discounts cannot be combined. Discounts do not apply to Behavior Coaching or the Summer Camp.

Sample 1-Week Adventure Trip Itinerary:

Activities, locations, and meals may vary based on availability, weather, and group preferences. 


Pick up from Tampa International Airport. Head to Myakka River State Park for hiking, fishing, and paddling. Complete the Canopy Walkway tour. Restrooms, showers with hot water, and laundry facilities are available. Group orientation and introductions, along with some fun get-to-know-each-other games and team-building activities. We will conduct behavioral coaching session #1 and give an overview of the program and expectations.


From our campground at Myakka River State Park, the day starts with basic training on wilderness first aid, orienteering, backpacking, camping, and wilderness survival skills. Complete behavioral coaching sessions #2 and #3. Enjoy a gourmet campfire dinner of campfire chicken baked with potatoes and s’mores for dessert.


Morning: After a typical hearty campfire breakfast of eggs, pancakes, yogurt, fruit, and bacon or ham, we start the day with fishing at Collier-Seminole State Park. The 7,271-acre park lies partly within the great mangrove swamp of South Florida, one of the largest mangrove swamps in the world, and features vegetation and wildlife typical of Florida’s Everglades. Behavioral coaching sessions #4 and #5 (morning and evening). Overnight camp-out with fried fish, seasoned vegetables, and apple crisps for dessert.


We continue our stay at Collier-Seminole State Park and enjoy hiking, fishing, paddling, biking, and geocaching.  Restrooms, showers with hot water, and laundry facilities are available in the park. Today we work on wilderness skills, cookout, and hold behavioral coaching sessions #6 and #7 (morning and evening). Dinner of burgers and brats with caramelized onions and peppers and grilled strawberry shortcake for dessert.


We head out and enjoy a beach day at Marco Island. Today we teach the basics of surfing, bodyboarding, and snorkeling.  Behavioral coaching sessions #8 and #9 (morning and evening) are conducted. Today’s food includes skewered steak and shrimp with vegetables over an open fire with no-bake fruit cobbler for dessert.


Move to Highlands Hammock State Park. We walk and mountain bike the trails where the Florida panther and black bear quietly pass beneath the ancient, towering oaks of a magnificent hydric hammock (mountain bikes are provided). Complete the Alligator Tram Tour (weather dependent). Behavioral coaching sessions #10 and #11 (morning and evening) are conducted. We conduct Decision Night, Camper Awards, and the closing ceremony. Spaghetti dinner will be served with a special dessert!


Behavioral coaching session #12, wrap up, and head back to Tampa International Airport.

This personalized approach enables coaches to tailor interventions to suit each individual’s specific needs.
  2. Goal Setting and Accountability: Coaches work with clients to establish realistic goals and action plans to reduce technology usage with their Behavior Planning Journal (BPJ).
  3. Cognitive Behavioral Techniques: The Summerland approach often incorporates cognitive-behavioral techniques to challenge negative thought patterns and cultivate healthier habits. By identifying and modifying automatic reactions to technology stimuli, individuals can gradually regain control over their behaviors.
  4. Stress Management: Coaches help clients explore healthier coping mechanisms for stress and boredom, reducing the need for escapism through excessive technology use.
  5. Time Management and Productivity: Learning to manage technology use more efficiently can lead to increased productivity and a better school-life or work-life balance. Using a Behavior Planning Journal or “BPJ,” coaches assist clients in optimizing their technology habits to enhance productivity and focus.
  6. Relapse Prevention: Technology addiction recovery is not always smooth sailing. Coaches equip clients with strategies to prevent relapses and handle setbacks, empowering them to sustain long-term behavior change.
  7. Parent Education and Involvement: Coaches work with parents by communicating the child’s progress and providing parenting strategies when appropriate. Parents of Adventure Trip clients receive the same family workshop presentation that all Summerland Camps parents receive.

Embark on an unforgettable outdoor adventure by camping at three of Florida’s most captivating state parks: Myakka River, Collier-Seminole, and Highlands Hammock. Each park offers a unique and enriching experience, where you can immerse yourself in nature’s tranquility, discover diverse ecosystems, and create cherished memories with new friends.

Anastasia State Park: Located on Florida’s East Coast adjacent to historic St Augustine, more than 1,600 acres of unspoiled beaches, tidal marshes, maritime hammocks, and ancient sand dunes make this a captivating destination for visitors.  Anastasia State Park is a haven for visitors and for wildlife. Abundant wading birds hunt for food along Salt Run, including colorful roseate spoonbills. Osprey and eagles rule the skies, and painted buntings and warblers often flit about the hammock forests. Visitors can observe wildlife along the beach from a canoe or kayak, or on the Ancient Dunes Nature Trail. As an extra bonus, the park’s campsites are just a short stroll from the beach.

Health and Fitness

Campers participate in morning workouts. These workouts sample a variety of possible routines they can implement when back home. We teach the very basics of resistance training, calisthenics, yoga, stretching, and cardio routines and discuss choosing the right workout for each camper’s individual needs.

We also discuss nutrition and dispel common myths and misconceptions related to fitness and nutrition. We have found that many of our campers quickly develop an interest in fitness after attending a Summerland Adventure Trip. Our goal related to health and fitness is to set campers up with a healthy routine they can implement upon transitioning back home. Fortunately, the basics of incorporating a healthy workout and nutritional routine fit perfectly into our self-regulation and goal-setting methodology.

Finally, incorporated into our Summerland Workbook curriculum are lessons to help campers find replacement activities for screen habits. We help our campers identify health routines so that when they arrive back home they can hit the ground running with a full day of scheduled activity that meets their fitness, health, social, and academic goals.
