At our North Carolina location we have a blast! Imagine yourself on nature’s roller coaster- floating down a cool mountain river with your new friends on rubber raft paddling from one rapid to the next. It’s the ride of a lifetime. But rafting is not all the our mountain location offers. Rock climbing and caving are other opportunities that come from being is the mountains.
The mountains of western North Carolina is the perfect setting for our East Coast camp. The elevation provides opportunities for whitewater at multiple levels- from easy beginner rapids to exhilarating rapids for expert paddlers. Nearby Asheville, North Carolina, was named by Whitewater Paddling magazine as a “Top 10 Whitewater Town” and was named the “#1 Vacation with a Splash” by Good Morning America and National Geographic Adventurer.

The Nantahala is the most popular whitewater experience in the South East. The river is controlled by a dam, and there are novice and an intermediate rapid towards the end of the ride. The Nantahala Outdoor Center is about an hour and a half from Asheville.
We use the Nantahala Outdoor Center as our service provider on the river, which is recognized as “One of the Best Outfitters on Earth” by National Geographic Adventure.
French Broad River
This nearby river offers novice and intermediate rapids, and the level of difficulty depends on rainfall levels. Typically this is a half day trip and a great first whitewater experience. Campers are provided a box lunch for the trip and get a multiple opportunities for swimming in the river. Camper are required to wear a life jacket regardless of swimming ability.
Safety is Our Focus
Each camper is outfitted with a life jacket and rafts are launched under the supervision of a qualified guide. We use a local rafting service, so while campers do get to paddle and learn whitewater basics, they do so under the supervision of a whitewater expert.
Join us on a tour to see the inside of a mountain! Campers get to explore a mysterious world deep underground in the depths of Humpback Mountain. Campers spend the day in the cool damp underworld of Linville Caverns which features amazing mineral color, unique formations, and an underground stream with native trout.
As we explore this underground world we check out the “Bottomless Pool” and a peek into total darkness. Our expert guide provides us with an education on local geology and the unique life forms what are found in the cave.
NOT a Teen Boot Camp
Let’s face it- change works best when it comes from within. That’s why we offer such exciting activities. We like to say we are NOT a teen boot camp as a result. We challenge our campers and introduce them to the best opportunities for fun and excitement anywhere. We simply take a different approach at Summerland Camps. We don’t believe for a second that anyone has permanently changed from being forced into it. Instead, we show our campers a world of fun and excitement that is possible when new routines are created – along with different ways of seeing the world and responding to your environment in different ways. That’s why we say we are NOT a teen boot camp- we are so much more effective.
